Shaping the earth back-horse riding at the bottom of Haleakala dormant crater. Maui, Hawaii. Haleakala is known for many optical illusions… I loved my trip to Hawaii, to Haleakala, in particular. The now dormant crater offers the most sensational natural illusions and, with that, possibilities. After all, all is an illusion before it becomes reality. Right?

Sun reflecting off Haleakala crater, Maui, Hawaii. Once the sun sets, the temperatures drop by 10F. It’s cold and it’s dark. And there’s a long, windy road all the way 10K ft down to the sea level, a journey through darkness one has to take in order to leave the quiet serenity of this unique place (haunted by unique optical illusions) and reach Maui’s reach life. This twisted road into pitch Darkness connects the two extremes of the island, extremes found on other Hawaiian islands, too. But witnessing sunset over Haleakala is worth it all—the cold, darkness and the unknown—because it offers a connection with the soul within and with the Nature that reigns among all of us, still.

Brockengespenst, the Brocken ghost or Brocken Spectre is an optical illusion that may appear only in three places on earth: on the Brocken mountain, in Germany (hence the name), in Scotland and Haleakala (dormant volcano, that is) in Maui, Hawaii. The “illusion” can happen if a few elements are in place: you are there around sunset, there are clouds and/or fog and/or rain. The illusion is that your shadow will appear surrounded by a rainbow. (Hawaiian name for rainbow is ‘anuenue’)
